Have you seen the clever branding of some companies that say "Safe Synthetics". Hmmm I have and I went into one of these stores and looked around, I even fell into the pressure of buying something (more fool me) after I had read some of the ingredients.
When I want natural products I really want naturally good for you products. I don't want faux natural products that are made to seem natural due to clever plays on words.
I mean really, safe synthetics! I am not sure that there are such things, the FDA decides what is and isn't a safe synthetic and quite honestly I do not think they have our best interests at hearts. The fact that a company can hide what is in their products and use the phrase Safe Synthetics kind of gets my hackles up.
Here are some of those so called safe synthetics.
Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate - Causes irritation to skin and respiratory systems. You can read more here.
Methyl and propyl parabens - I don't like parabens at all! Basically these are derived from minerals and used as preservatives. Parabens have been linked to cancer and also disrupting hormones. They also have a similar makeup to estrogen which is sometimes linked to breast cancer.
Sodium Laureth and Lauryl Sulphate - This little beauty hides out in so many products, shampoos, body lotions etc. Known skin irritant, can cause itching, flaking, dryness and tissue damage. It can also cause carcinogenic compounds when mixed with certain ingredients. Umm Yeah No Thanks!
Talc - I started avoiding talk in products (It is found in alot of mineral makeups) when I learnt that it has been linked to ovarian and lung cancer. I also saw recently that when trialed in animal studies it produced tumors.
Colors , you know those things that are used to make things unusually colorful. Here is a great link to look more into food dyes and coloring .
Yep defenently not things I want on my skin. I know you can't avoid chemicals all the time and some of you may not care at all, but I care and I care that my family is not exposed to things that can irritate and cause cancer, whenever possible. So you can choose to use this information or just pretend you didn't see this post :)

I totally agree with all this! That stuff should just be banned from products!! Ewwww. So much of it is harmful. It's hard to find shampoo that doesn't have Lauryl Sulfate. I check labels on all that stuff now a days!
ReplyDeleteTotally on board with you on this. The ability for companies to label something as "safe" when it is clearly not makes me crazy.
